Overuse Injuries

There have been a number of overuse injuries this year at Swaggies caused by incorrect use of the keyboard and mouse. You have to put together some Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.

Firstly prepare a two page article that will raise awareness of repetitive strain injuries in the office.

Safety guidelines should include the following:

o Causes of overuse injuries
o Typical symptoms
o Ways to prevent and reduce overuse injuries

You will need access to printed material and the Internet (e.g. Work Cover site is helpful www.workcover.com.au).

Give the article an appropriate title and include images so that it will grab the attention of staff. Save this document as Overuse-yourinitials in the OHS subfolder in the Human Resources Department

Proofread your work and print off a copy for me to check.

Secondly, create a checklist for staff to help identify potential risks to staff that may be caused by sitting at the computer for long periods. Set this out as a table with Yes and No columns for staff to tick as per the example below. See if you can come up with at least ten points in addition to the suggestions.

Staff checklist for preventing and reducing injuries at the workstation

Yes

No

My chair is comfortable and adjusted to support my lower back

I regularly look away from the screen to rest my eyes

Talk this over with members of your department as they may have some good suggestions or may give you helpful feedback. Give this page an appropriate heading and ask staff to complete the checklist to evaluate the ways they actively try to prevent and reduce workplace injuries. And finally, complete the checklist yourself.

Save this in the OHS subfolder as workstation-yourinitials.doc.

PROOFREAD all documents and print off a copies for checking.
